A hybrid electric car is powered by an IC engine supported by an electric motor working in parallel. The motor draws the power from a battery which is charged by a generator when the engine is running. The plug-in type hybrids can be charged from an external power source. In modern hybrid cars the energy spent in braking is also used for charging the battery.
The Prius is the first hybrid car produced commercially. The car launched in 2012 has 2 hybrid variants the Z5 and the Z6 in the market priced Rupees 38.10 and 39.80 lakh. The total power is 134 bhp, 97 bhp from a 1.8L petrol engine and 37 hp from an electric motor. The mileage of the car is 23.91 kmpl.
The Camri hybrid priced 31.19 lakh has a 2.5L and 158 bhp petrol engine and a 44 hp electric motor. The car has a total power of 202 bhp and gives a mileage of 19.6 kmpl. The Ni-metal hydride battery is charged by an in-built generator.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz SHVS hybrid
The Ciaz diesel hybrid has 6 variants priced Rupees 8.23 to 10.28 lakh. The 1.3L engine along with the integrated starter generator gives mileages of 28.09 kmpl. The stop-start system and the brake energy charging help in improving the mileages.
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga
The MPV Ertiga has launched the 5 diesel mini-hybrid variants recently. Priced Rupees 6.5 to 9.25 lakh the Ertiga SHVS are powered by 1.3 litres, 89 bhp diesel engines. Along with the integrated starter generator, a bigger battery, the stop-start facility and the brake force recovery system the mileages have improved to 24.52 kmpl.
The i8 hybrid is one of the best high-tech cars available in India priced Rupees 2.29 crore. A 1.5L and 231 bhp petrol engine, a 131 hp electric motor and a 7.1 KWh Lithium-ion battery are the elements of the power system. The car with a total power of 360 bhp gives a mileage of 47.45 kmpl. BMW 7-series hybrid priced Rupees 1.41 crore is also available in India.
